Iron-Horse-Trail

Iron Horse Trail San Ramon, CA

Looking to get some fresh air, exercise and sunshine? You don’t have to look far when you live in the San Ramon Valley. There is a wide variety of trails and parks to choose from, and most are located right here in town! Put on your walking shoes, and grab a water bottle, and check out some of these great spots!

One of the most popular places to go for exercise is The Iron Horse Trail. One access point is located at Bollinger Canyon Road, just east of Central Park, near Camino Ramon. This trail stretches 18.5 miles from the Alameda County line in Dublin, northward to Concord. Formerly a Southern Pacific Railroad route, the Iron Horse Trail now features a paved multi-use trail great for bikes, strollers, dogs on leashes, walking, or jogging with adjacent unpaved or soft trails in some areas. There are benches, water fountains and trash cans dotted along the trail.

If you are looking for more challenging routes in a more natural setting, San Ramon has that too! Many of these trails are frequented by cows, so beware of the cow patties!

Summit View Trails
1000 Vistamonte Dr San Ramon, CA 94582
If you are looking for a quick trail to walk, this is the one. This hiking trail is short and kid friendly that features amazing views of San Ramon, with a few benches along the way.

Las Trampas Regional Wilderness
18012 Bollinger Canyon Rd San Ramon, CA 94583
Las Trampas features the Elderberry trail. It’s about 4.5 miles, with very little shade, therefore it might be challenging on hot days. There is some steep rocky terrain- be prepared for a bit of a workout.

Bishop Ranch Regional Preserve
Morgan Drive San Ramon, CA 94583
This hiking trail is nestled in a residential area with street parking by the trail head. The hike is about 3 ½ miles round trip, and is steep and strenuous in places.

Dublin Hills Regional Park
Dublin Blvd & Marshall Canyon Dr Dublin, CA 94568
This area can be accessed right off Dublin Blvd. about 2 miles down from the San Ramon Blvd. exit from I-580W. Great for beginning hikers, as the trails aren’t too steep, with great hiking trails up to the top of the ridge. Keep an eye out for cows and what they leave behind!

If a public park is more what you had in mind, San Ramon has a lot to choose from. A few local favorites are:

San Ramon Central Park
12501 Alcosta Blvd San Ramon, CA 94583
This is San Ramon’s crown jewel, featuring: community center, picnic areas. Amphitheater, (free concerts in the summer). Big play structure, lots of sports fields for baseball, soccer, and football.

Athens Downs Park
680 Montevideo Rd San Ramon, CA 94583
This park is great for group picnics, has an updated play structure, and plenty of parking. There are tennis courts, ball fields and enclosed bathrooms.

Valley View Park
N Monarch and N Wedgewood San Ramon, CA 94582
This is a 4 acre park. It has a nice shaded picnic area, 2 play structures, restrooms, tennis courts, baseball fields, and plenty of grass.

Exercise and fresh air are readily available for the taking here in San Ramon. So whether you are bringing the kids to the park, or walking on the wild side, there are plenty of ways to spend some quality time outdoors!
