Selling the house and moving is something the average American homeowner does about every five to seven years. There are also those among us that have enjoyed living in the same house for decades. We all will sell and move at some point in our lives, and the reasons are varied. Here are a few examples of why we are selling the ol’ homestead.
Outgrowing your home. That cute little starter home was perfect when you bought it. Now the addition of a spouse and/or children has made things a little tight. Time for something bigger to accommodate your growing family.
An Empty Nest. That house that used to buzz with activity is now very quiet. The kids have grown up and moved on, and you don’t need all these bedrooms and space. Time for something smaller, with less upkeep!
Moving on up… Things are going well, and it’s time for an upgrade. You are enjoying certain professional and financial success, and a newer, grander home in an upscale neighborhood is what you want. Move over, Joneses!
Job Change In this crazy economy and job market, relocations are becoming more and more common. Sometimes the new job is across the state or the country. Even if the new job is more than one hours commute away, moving closer to work can reduce the hours spent in the car, and the expensive gallons of gas consumed every day.
What was I thinking? Sometimes we all make choices that we later regret. If you thought you could get by in a house without a backyard, or if that train track over the back fence is rattling the windows and your nerves every hour, it may be time for a housing change.
Relationship changes. Things like marriages, death, or divorce can greatly impact your housing needs. Whether it is combining households, and selling the extra house, or selling due to the financial and/or emotional impact of a death or divorce, the ebb and flow of relationships are a key reason for selling.
There goes the neighborhood… This used to be a great place to live 30 years ago. If things are getting run down or changing for the worse, or if you are increasingly worried about your safety and security, selling sooner than later would probably be best.
Move closer to family. You enjoy a close knit relationship with your family. If various factors like jobs or marriages have you all spread apart, why not move closer? Sometimes aging parents, or new grand-babies are a great reason to sell and move closer.
Retired! You did it! Time to relax and enjoy life. If you plan to do a lot of traveling, maybe selling the family home, and buying a smaller place in a planned community that includes upkeep is more sensible for you these days. Where’s that passport??
Health issues – that 2-story family home may not be such a great idea for Mom and Dad these days. A one story place like a condo with less maintenance would be more comfortable for them, or even a unit in an assisted living facility where they feel more secure and be taken care of.
