Located on the Eastern side of San Ramon in the community known as Windemere, is Dougherty Valley High School, one of two San Ramon public high schools in the San Ramon Valley Unified School District (SRVUSD). Established in 2007, Dougherty Valley High has quickly gained notoriety for its diverse student community, its state-of-the-art campus, and its outstanding achievements in academics.
As of the 2016 school year, there are 140 certified teachers and 3,006 students enrolled at Dougherty Valley High. And the students (grades 9-12) who make up this number certainly reflect San Ramon and the greater San Francisco Bay Area’s diverse communities. In fact, Dougherty Valley High is considered the most diverse in the district. The ethnic/racial make-up of the student population currently stands at: 71% Asian, 14% Caucasian, 7% Hispanic/Latino, 6% Filipino, 3% African American, >1% Native American, and >1% Pacific Islander.
To accommodate this diverse population and meet the wide range of specialties and needs, architectural developers Shapell Industries and Windemere Ranch Industries, set out to create a state-of-the-art campus to rival the best in California. Though the cost was hefty at over $120 million dollars, Dougherty Valley’s campus has achieved what it set out to do and provide students with 54 acres of countless opportunity. On this campus there are 11 major buildings including two gymnasiums, a career tech facility, a library, a commons building, an administration building, and four two-story classroom buildings. In addition, this state-of-the-art campus has provided students with a top notch performing arts center complete with a 600-seat theater and box office lobby, an aquatic center with a 50-meter Olympic-size swimming pool, and a 2,800-seat stadium with lights and a press box. It’s not surprising then that the Dougherty Valley campus has received the award for Best of California from California Construction magazine.
Though the school stands out for its diversity and grandeur, Dougherty Valley High absolutely shines with its achievements in academic excellence. It is currently ranked as the number one school in the district and 27th within California, based on the academic performance index (API) score. The API which is the standard measure for school performance within California has a range from 200 to 1000, and Dougherty has scored over 900 points consistently for the past several years. In 2013 and 2014, the school was awarded gold medals and ranked among the top 500 schools in the country by U.S. News and has consistently been awarded a score of 10/10 by greatschools.com, a feat few California schools have been able to achieve. And in 2015, the state of California awarded Dougherty Valley High a Gold Ribbon for its distinguished school program and success in academics. Part of the schools overall success may be attributed to the 24:1 student to teacher ratio, which is lower than the California average. Nevertheless, Dougherty Valley High is highly ranked and will continue to remain at the top of lists because of its strong focus on high academic standards and because of the positive learning environment it has fostered for its students and teachers.
