Trick-or-treating evolved from the ancient Celtic tradition of putting out treats and food to placate spirits who roamed the streets at Samhain, a sacred festival that marked the end of the Celtic calendar year. The living would often disguise themselves in scary costumes so the spirits of the dead would be tricked into thinking they were one of their own and pass by without causing harm. The masked villagers would also form parades to lead the spirits out of town limits.
